New Bedford Alimony Lawyer

Spousal Support and Alimony

Alimony, if applicable, is an already complex and often contentious issue in divorce proceedings, and the new reforms to alimony law in Massachusetts only increase the complexity. I am Sandra G. Saunders. As a New Bedford alimony attorney, I can help you through the complexities involved in alimony/spousal support in your divorce.
Whenever possible, I help my clients resolve alimony disputes through mediation and other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods. This approach is much less contentious, and it usually saves time and money for my clients, while providing them a great deal more control over the process and outcome.

March 2012 Alimony Reform

Effective March 1, 2012, new alimony reform laws have gone into effect in Massachusetts. Among other changes, the new reforms use a new formula for determining support based on the potential recipient’s actual need and the paying spouse’s ability to provide the support. There are also new time limits on the length that alimony can continue and the legal recognition of different types of alimony. These changes are sweeping and comprehensive, but the application of these new laws to an individual’s situation will be, as it always has been, largely determined by the individual judge.
The good news about the alimony reforms is that they go a long way to limit the potential for abuse of the system. The more difficult aspect of these reforms is that they will drastically change our approach to negotiating and litigating this type of dispute.

It is essential to work with a lawyer who is up to date on the alimony reforms.
